Fujairah, United Arab Emirates
Detached from the rest of the emirates by the Hajar mountains, Fujairah boasts of a pristine location with unspoiled natural beauty. Framed by the Indian Ocean to the east and the mountains to the west, Fujairah is considered one of the most beautiful places in the UAE, with tranquil beaches, and mountains that slope all the way down to the ocean. It is also the only emirate to have a coastline solely on the Gulf of Oman and none on the Arabian Gulf. Situated on the eastern edge of the country, it is also mountainous rather than mostly desert, boasting more regular rainfall than the other regions.
History buffs have a lot to see and discover in what was once a traditional fishing village. Apparently the first home for immigrants who arrived from the south-eastern Arabian Peninsula, Fujairah houses an old fort that used to serve as protection from invaders. Several important archaeological finds have shown proof of human settlement dating as far back as the Iron Age. The emirate is well known for water sports such as scuba diving, snorkelling and deep sea fishing.
